HUNGER Editor’s Letter

by Molly, collage by Kathryn

Hey Readers! This month’s theme is HUNGER here on Pop Culture Puke. We’d love for you to submit any type of work about longing, desire, or even stuff about legitimate hunger, like your favorite foods or recipes! As always, it’s up to your interpretation.

I’ve been listening to Nicki Minaj’s 2009 mixtape, Beam Me Up Scotty for a majority of the summer so far, and whenever I listen, I’m always struck by her intro, which I’m going to leave here for you for motivation to go after what you crave. I think it’s the perfect picture of hunger.

“You know, a lot of people ask me…

Why I feel that, you know, I’ve gotten a lot of notoriety so quickly and I don’t know,

people seem to be under the impression that I’ve made it to this point fast!

And you know, obviously for me, I don’t feel like that!

Cause it’s me, I feel like I’ve been doing it for ten billion years,

But every time someone says something like that to me

I really remember to thank God for getting me this far, cause sometimes you don’t realize

how far you’ve gotten until you look around and look at the people who are still trailing far behind you.

And I know that no matter what, it’s, in the end, it’s not going to be about my talent,

You know, it’s not going to be about connections, It’s not gonna be about my looks.

It’s gonna be about who wants it the most.

And I want it the most!”

And per usual, here is a list of things that I’m loving/feeling motivated by this month. It also serves as a good to-do list for anyone looking for things to watch/listen to/read this summer! Enjoy!

“Abbey” by Mitski, Puberty 2 by Mitski, everything Mitski really, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Beam Me Up Scotty by Nicki Minaj, Room, Aliens and Anorexia by Chris Kraus, Freetown Sound by Blood Orange, Too Young to Be in Love by Hunx and his Punx, bright eyeliner, Kim Kardashian’s profile in GQ, and Great British Bake Off.

Have a great July, everyone. Summer is the perfect time to plot your benevolent world takeover.
