Gold Medal is a new segment on Pop Culture Puke. In every Gold Medal post a contributor awards someone who they admire on the internet.
Gabby Noone is a contributor for Rookie Mag, BuzzFeed, and her blog Twelve O’Clocke. I love her piece “Manic Pixie Panic” on Rookie and particularly enjoy her DIY posts on Rookie, such as her DIY Best Friend Earrings. I also really like this post on her Tumblr about inside jokes. As well as adoring her writing on these sites, all of her tweets are so clever (scroll down for a few examples).
I asked Gabby a few questions:
How did you begin writing online?
I’ve always had some sort of blog since the summer after 7th grade, so when I was..13. I think that was how I discovered I wanted to write, more so than just in school. I started writing for Rookie after I expressed interest to my best friend and staff writer Hazel. Tavi had been following my Tumblr for awhile and agreed I’d be a good fit, which is one of the best things to ever happen to me! That was the first time I was paid to write.
What’s your favourite thing that you’ve ever written on the internet?
This is hard because mostly everything I write I look back on and cringe. I am proud of my work though! It’s like hearing yourself on tape, you know? Ok, I think right now my favorite thing is this poem I wrote the other week composed of phrases copied and pasted from Yelp reviews of Forever 21. Also, my essay “Manic Pixie Panic” that I wrote for Rookie. That was the first time I wrote something that I thought I only was feeling and then had people emailing me and commenting me to say they could relate, which was so cool!
What’s your favourite thing that you’ve ever read on the internet?
This technically isn’t an article, but this is my absolutely favorite thing I’ve ever read on the internet:http://www.meatloafcake.com/. Meatloafcake.com is just a man revealing his journey of making a meatloaf cake for his family and I have built my life philosophy upon it.
What are your favourite books?
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.
It’s very creepy and dystopian, yet so atmospherical and cozy at the same time! This is the only book that’s ever made me cry (I always tear up during movies and tv though).
Role Models by John Waters
John Waters is one of *my* role models and one of my biggest fears is that if I met him he’d think I was such a normie. Which is probably true. His other essay books are great too.
Mindy Kaling and Tina Fey’s books were very influential to me during high school. They made me realize you can turn your generally uncomfortable existence into something that makes other people laugh and feel good about themselves.
If you had to choose between only reading articles online or only reading print which would you choose?
Even though this would be hard because I would not longer have the copy and paste function, I’d say print just because I’ve noticed I’m better at retaining info when I read in print.
What female TV or movie character inspires you?
While I wouldn’t say she’s my #1 inspiration now, Kat Stratford from 10 Things I Hate About you was very influential to me growing up. Like, when I started high school I was like “YEAH! I’M GONNA READ FEMINIST LITERATURE AND BLAST MUSIC FROM MY CAR AND GET INTO A GREAT COLLLEGE!” And that’s what I did! Like I honestly had never seen a girl like that before watching that movie.
But I’d say right now my biggest inspirations are Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec and Illana from Broad City. I’m inspired by how they are both so enthusiastic about their own visions and don’t let people stop them (even if they’re super misguided most of the time haha!).
If you could pick one movie and live in that world instead of this world which movie would you choose?
Maybe the world of the Disney Channel Original Movie, Smart House? I’d love to live in a world where your house can make a smoothie for you.
You can only wear one colour of clothing for the rest of your life- what colour do you pick?
I mean in reality I’d probably pick black because then shopping wouldn’t be exhausting, ya know? But I would love to wear pepto bismol pink everything if it were more feasible.
Film or digital?
I am so bad at taking pics. I will say FILM because even if the picture is mediocre people are still impressed. Like, no one gets mad when disposable camera pics are messed up. They’re like “Yeah, I just love the rawness of it.”
Pie or cake?
PIE! While I do love cake, I think it’s easier to o.d. on. But like you can eat pie for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and still not feel like you can never eat something sweet again.
Flappy Bird or Candy Crush?
NEITHER!!! I played Candy Crush for a week and it was very detrimental. I wasted so much time I could’ve spent doing very important and productive things, (like scrolling through Instagram).
Overalls or turtleneck?
Michaels or Hobby Lobby?
Michaels. BUT there are no Hobby Lobby locations near me so this isn’t personal.
Martha Stewart or Amy Sedaris?
I gotta say Martha Stewart because she is the definition of boss bitch and I really do turn to her for guidance.
Paris Geller (Gilmore Girls) or Lindsay Weir (Freaks And Geeks)?
Paris Geller. Okay, yeah she can be a bit much, but she is a girl who knows what she wants and will do what she needs to get it! Plus, deep down she has such a big heart. Uh, I love bossy girls so much it makes me emotional.
Friendship pins or friendship bracelets?
Friendship pins! I don’t like wearing jewelry in the shower and I feel like once a friendship bracelet is off, it’s off for good and that’s too ominous. A pin you can stick on your backpack or denim jacket and you’re good to go.
