Girl Crush: Lorde by Sandra

Lorde a.k.a. Ella Yelich-O’Connor is the queen of several things like curly hair, black clothing, plum colored lipstick, and the airwaves of nearly every radio station on planet earth. She’s accomplished things some of us would never dare to dream and in such a short amount of time. It feels as if I blinked once and she already took over every inch of the world. Her debut album Pure Heroine was one of my favorites from 2013 and I honestly believe the track “400 Lux” changed my way of life somehow. That track alone makes me feel like I’m driving through my suburban neighborhood without actually doing so. Not only is the album well written and clever, but it’s relatable. I listen to at least one song off of the album or The Love Club EP every day and I always find something new in each song that I can relate to entirely. She has also done a few incredible covers of other songs, but my all-time favorite is her cover of Kanye West’s “Hold My Liquor” because KANYE and it’s my favorite song off of Yeezus.

One of many things I love about Lorde/Ella is that she just doesn’t give a fuck about what anyone says. With all of the nonsense surrounding her age, her personal life, and her dance moves (seriously, people actually criticize her dance moves like it’s soooo necessary) she just DOESN’T CARE. She’s doing this for herself and this is who she is and I LOVE HER FOR IT.

Lorde/Ella has proven to the typical mundane adult that teenage girls are capable of creating outstanding art. It’s so easy to dismiss a teenager’s way of expressing themselves through art, or whatever it may be, and pass it off as almost nothing (as a 17-year-old myself I can attest to this firsthand.) Yet Lorde showed everyone on a mass scale that anything can be done even if you’re a 17-year-old from New Zealand, it really does not take away from the fact that you have something to say and you have a talent to show the world.

As a 17-year-old girl watching another 17-year-old girl launch into mega stardom, I can only watch in awe and cheer her on from the sidelines and get extremely emotional when I watch her live performances via Youtube. I can only imagine how excited I will get watching the Coachella livestream in April please pray to the goddesses for me.

So basically Lorde/Ella is perfect and is probably going to be New Zealand’s next prime minister or queen in the near distant future. Either it’s going to be her or my Kiwi BFF Lucy.
